What is Enoshima Lanterns 2023?
Enoshima Lanterns 2023 is a summer light event that aims to promote the local area and showcase the beauty and charm of Enoshima Island.
The event is based on the legend of Enoshima Engi, which tells the story of how Enoshima Island was born. According to the legend, the goddess Benzaiten descended from heaven. The wicked five-headed dragon Gozuryu witnessed Benzaiten's arrival and instantly fell in love with her. He proposed marriage but she insisted that he help the people of Koshigoe. Gozuryu agreed and dedicated himself to protecting the area. Recognizing his good intentions, Benzaiten and Gozuryu jointly safeguarded Koshigoe, leading to its prosperity.
The event features lanterns that depict scenes from this legend, as well as other motifs that evoke the summer season, such as goldfish, morning glories, and fireworks.
The highlight of the event is the light installation “Light Picture Scroll” by VELVETA DESIGN, which transforms the Enoshima Shrine from the Zuishin Gate to the Benten Shrine into a magical and colorful spectacle.
The installation consists of seven scenes that tell the story of Enoshima Engi, as well as two new scenes that celebrate the beauty of Enoshima Shrine in summer and the festive atmosphere of a summer night market. Visitors are sure to enjoy this dynamic experience.
