What's the Nebuta Festival?
The Nebuta Festival is one of Aomori's biggest events and was recognized as a national important intangible cultural property in 1980.
The Nebuta Festival is a grand event with a parade of giant doll-shaped lanterns called "nebuta" throughout the city, and dancers known as haneto, who chant "rassera, rassera (welcome, welcome)" as they jump and dance.
The festival usually takes place from August 2-7, and large nebuta parades can be seen daily throughout this period. On the final evening, the procession moves to the water, and you can enjoy a finale of fireworks alongside the floats in Aomori Port.

- 1. What should I pack for the festival?
- Aomori is famous for its snow, but the Nebuta Festival takes place in midsummer in August. The average temperature is above 20℃, so short sleeves are fine, but it's best to bring a jacket for when staying overnight.
However, the Nebuta Festival will go ahead regardless of weather, and most routes don't have shelter, so we definitely recommend that you take a rain jacket.
- 2. Which are the best areas for seeing the Nebuta Festival?
- ・Close-Up: We recommend heading to Shinmachi-dori Street to experience the power of the nebuta from up close. Hotel JAL City Aomori faces this street.
・Take it all in: To get a good vantage of the entire festival, we recommend along the wider National Route 4. The performances of each group will be exhilarating in front of the city hall because it has the judges' seating and TV broadcasts. The Richmond Hotel Aomori is along the National Route 4.
・Stroll around: There aren't many paid seats on Hakko-dori, where the Daiwa Roynet Hotel Aomori is located, or on Heiwa Koen-dori, where Hotel Aomori is located. We recommend this area for those who want to walk around casually and see everything.

- At the Nebuta Festival, the events and sequence differ depending on the day, such as Children Nebuta and Large Nebuta. If you can, we recommend staying for a few nights to fully enjoy the festival. In particular, you should definitely stay for the last day because there is also a fireworks display!
