Getting There

From Shin-Osaka Station, take the Shinkansen to Okayama (roughly 45 minutes to 1 hour), then a local JR train to Uno Station (about 1 hour, sometimes with a transfer at Chayamachi), then walk five minutes to Uno Port for the ferry to Miyanoura Port on Naoshima (about 20 minutes). Total travel time is roughly 2 to 2.5 hours each way. A cheaper, Shinkansen-free route via local and rapid trains plus ferry is also possible for around ¥6,500-7,000, but takes closer to 3 hours.

Good to know: Chichu Art Museum requires a timed advance reservation -- it does not operate like a normal walk-in museum. Book this first, since it anchors the rest of your schedule.

A Realistic Timed Itinerary

  1. Early departure from Osaka

    Aim to leave early enough to catch a ferry around 8:22 or 9:22am from Uno Port, arriving at Miyanoura around 8:42-9:42am.

  2. Miyanoura Port & Red Pumpkin

    Snap a photo with Yayoi Kusama's Red Pumpkin near the port if the queue is short -- come back later if not, rather than losing morning museum time.

  3. Chichu Art Museum (late morning)

    Take the island bus or walk (20-30 minutes) to Chichu Art Museum for your reserved slot. Built largely underground by Tadao Ando, it houses works by James Turrell, Walter De Maria, and Claude Monet.

  4. Benesse House Museum / Lee Ufan Museum (afternoon)

    Continue to the Benesse art area for one or two more sites -- Benesse House Museum and the Lee Ufan Museum are both within the same zone, connected by a free visitor shuttle when running.

  5. Art House Project (late afternoon)

    If time allows, walk or bus to Honmura for the Art House Project, where traditional houses have been turned into individual artworks.

  6. Return ferry with buffer

    Catch a ferry back to Uno by around 16:00-16:30 to comfortably make train connections to Osaka, arriving around 20:00-21:00. The last ferry departs roughly 17:05 -- don't cut it closer than that.

Tips

  • Book Chichu Art Museum's timed slot before anything else -- it sells out and anchors your whole schedule.
  • Two to three major sites is realistic for a day trip. Trying to fit more usually means rushing through all of them.
  • Electric bike rental (about ¥1,000 for 4 hours) at Miyanoura Port covers ground faster than walking if you want to fit in more.
  • If you also want Teshima or Inujima, or simply want a slower pace, an overnight stay on Naoshima is worth considering instead of a single-day trip.
