Getting There

From Kyoto Station, take the JR Tokaido Line (local, rapid, or special rapid) to Ishiyama Station -- about 15 minutes, ¥240 one way. From Ishiyama, board Teisan Bus No. 150 toward MIHO Museum -- about 50 minutes, ¥1,000 one way. The bus arrives directly at the museum's reception building, where you buy tickets before walking (5-10 minutes) or taking the free shuttle to the entrance itself.

Good to know: There is no direct public transport between central Koka and the museum -- the Ishiyama bus route above is the only practical public transport option, so plan bus timings both ways before you go.

Independent Visit vs Guided Tour

Going independently costs very little (roughly ¥1,240 each way in fares) but requires timing the infrequent bus service carefully in both directions. The trade-off is time and flexibility: the tour is a full-day, fixed-itinerary group trip, so you won't set your own pace at the museum the way an independent visit allows.

  • Budget 2-3 hours at the museum itself, plus roughly 1-1.5 hours of travel each way if going independently.
  • The approach to the museum -- a tunnel and suspension bridge opening onto the building -- is considered part of the experience, so don't rush straight in.
  • Cherry blossom season (the "pink tunnel") and the seasonal special exhibitions are the two times the museum gets genuinely busy; a weekday visit is noticeably quieter.
