Overview
Before You Book: If seeing giant pandas was the whole point of your visit: Ueno Zoo's pandas were returned to China in January 2026 and are not currently on view. The rest of the zoo remains fully open.
Opened in 1882 inside Ueno Park, Ueno Zoo is split into an East Garden and West Garden connected by a walking path — plan for a fair amount of walking across the 14-hectare grounds.
Even without the pandas, the East Garden's Sumatran tigers and the nocturnal aye-aye exhibit are worth the trip on their own, and the West Garden's Insectarium and children's zoo make this an easy pairing with kids.
Good to know: Because it sits inside Ueno Park, this is the easiest zoo visit in the world to combine with a museum day — the Tokyo National Museum and National Museum of Nature and Science are both a 5-minute walk away.
