The 2025 Japan World Expo (commonly known as the Osaka-Kansai Expo) is an international exhibition aiming to bring together 150 BIE member countries and 25 international organizations. Scheduled from April 13 to October 13, 2025, the event will take place on Yumeshima Island in Osaka.
The theme is “Designing Future Society for Our Lives,” with sub-themes of “Saving Lives,” “Empowering Lives,” and “Connecting Lives.”
In Japan, there has long been a cultural belief that “life” exists not only in living creatures but even in objects like “stones by the roadside.” Reflecting this perspective, the Expo theme of “life” extends beyond humans to include the broader natural world, encompassing a wide array of living beings and elements of nature.
The concept, “People's Living Lab,” is based on three core pillars.
The master plan highlights that “each person can consider their desired way of living, maximize their potential, and contribute to co-creating a sustainable society.”
Amid evolving social challenges like widening inequality and conflict, and advancements in technologies such as AI and biotechnology leading to Japan’s Society 5.0 (a concept for a future society where physical and virtual spaces are unified to solve social issues and promote economic growth), the Expo encourages participants to deeply reflect on “what it means to live happily.”
The expected number of visitors is approximately 28.2 million, with an estimated 3.5 million being international tourists.
As of October 2024, 161 countries and regions, along with 9 international organizations, have confirmed their participation. For the latest list of participants, please visit the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website:
Did you know that Osaka hosted an Expo back in 1970? This was Japan’s first World Expo, featuring 77 countries and 4 international organizations, with over 64 million visitors by its successful close. Japan was then in a period of rapid economic growth, beginning to enjoy a newfound sense of prosperity.
The iconic “Tower of the Sun” was created as a symbol for the 1970 Expo, designed by artist Taro Okamoto. Standing about 70 meters tall, the tower is known for its three distinct faces: the Golden Face, the Sun Face, and the Black Sun. Nearly 50 years later, it remains a beloved symbol at the Expo ’70 Commemorative Park and continues to attract visitors as a popular tourist site.
Created as a second symbol of the Osaka-Kansai Expo alongside the logo, the official mascot aims to be a beloved character embraced worldwide. Named “Myaku-Myaku,” it represents the continuity of wisdom, technology, history, culture, and international connections passed down through generations. Its unique design has attracted attention since its debut.
The Expo venue is located on Yumeshima, a man-made island in Osaka's waterfront area, surrounded by the scenic beauty of the Seto Inland Sea, connecting the site to the world by sea and sky. Spanning 155 hectares, the venue features a main circular pathway, the "Grand Roof" (Ring), which stretches about 2 km around the site and houses various national pavilions within it. The Grand Roof is designed to provide shade and shelter from rain, ensuring a comfortable experience even during warmer months.
Since there is no parking around the Yumeshima venue, visitors are encouraged to use public transportation, such as trains or buses, and allow ample travel time. For those arriving by train, the nearest station will be the newly established Yumeshima Station on the Osaka Metro Chuo Line, opening on January 19, 2025.
A shuttle bus connecting major train stations and the Expo venue requires advance reservations for all routes, except the Sakurajima Station route. The bus schedule will be available in late December 2024, with booking and payment starting around March 2025.
Additionally, direct airport buses will run from Kansai International Airport, Osaka International Airport, and JR Shin-Osaka Station. Here, we outline access from Kansai International Airport, Osaka International Airport, and JR Shin-Osaka Station.
