Osaka Castle has its origins in the Ishiyama Honganji Temple from the Sengoku period, which was the site of the Ishiyama battle where Oda Nobunaga fought, the castle construction by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the fall of the castle in the Siege of Osaka, the reconstruction by the Tokugawa Shogunate, the destruction in the turmoil of the Meiji Restoration, the jurisdiction of the army after the Meiji Restoration, and the post-war park development. It has always had a deep connection with Japanese history up to the present day. The stone walls, moats, Otemon Gate, Tamon Turret, Sengan Turret, and other old buildings that can be seen today are all from the Tokugawa period or later, and the area is designated as a special historic site by the country, with most of the old buildings designated as Important Cultural Properties. The Nishinomaru Garden, which overlooks the castle tower, is said to be the location of the residence of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's legal wife, Kita no Mandokoro.
