Nestled among majestic mountains, Enryaku-ji Temple on Mount Hiei has stood serenely for over a thousand years. As the birthplace of Japanese Tendai Buddhism, it has been a sacred place for monks to practice asceticism since its founding by the Great Teacher Saicho in 788 AD, and is revered as the "Mother Mountain of Japanese Buddhism." The temple is spread across 1,700 hectares of vast mountain forest and consists of three areas: the Eastern Pagoda area, the Western Pagoda area, and Yokawa area. The heart of the Eastern Pagoda area, Konpon Chudo Hall, enshrines the Yakushi Nyorai statue personally crafted by the Great Teacher Saicho and the inextinguishable Dharma lamp.
