Karatsu Castle was completed by Hideyoshi Toyotomi's vassal, Shimanokami Hirotaka Terazawa, over a period of seven years, beginning in 1602. The castle is also known as Maizuru Castle, as the sandy beach at the castle's core resembles a crane with its wings spread. The current castle was completed in October 1966 as a cultural and tourist facility, incorporating the Keicho style on the remains of the castle tower.
