The Marunouchi Building was built in 1923. It was damaged in the Great Kanto Earthquake of the same year and completed again in 1925. In 1995, Mitsubishi Estate announced that it would rebuild the Marunouchi Building due to its low earthquake resistance. The Architectural Institute of Japan's request for the building's preservation was not approved, and the building was demolished in 1999, with a new 36-story second-generation Marunouchi Building completed in 2002.
