Two things you cannot get in Shinjuku: a sumo ring anyone can stand on, and a Tokyo neighborhood that is not for tourists. Professional sumo bars women from the dohyo. Here, anyone can step on it. Sunamachi Ginza is one of Tokyo's three great shotengai: 140 shops, trading since 1932, still drawing 15,000 locals on a weekday. Come early, buy your street food there, and eat it beside the ring. Food is not included, and that is deliberate. Then 90 minutes: 30 on how sumo works, 30 watching two former pros fight a few meters away, 30 for your turn. Taking part is optional.
