Kiunkaku was built in 1919 as a villa in Atami, and after passing through three generations of owners, it finally operated as a ryokan (traditional Japanese inn). Currently, it features a vast, lush Japanese garden, a Japanese-style building that retains the beauty of traditional Japanese architecture, a Western-style building with a unique atmosphere that blends Japanese, Chinese, and European decorations and styles, and the remains of a large Roman bath. It is the only place in Atami where the culture of "villa," "hot spring," and "ryokan" remains, and visitors can leisurely admire the architecture or experience matcha tea and wearing a kimono in a Japanese-style room at the ryokan.
