Kumamoto Castle is also known as Ginkgo Castle. Today, in front of the castle tower, there is a large ginkgo tree, which is the origin of the castle's nickname "Ginkgo Castle". It is said that the ginkgo tree in the Kato Shrine and this tree were both planted by Kato Kiyomasa himself, but when the castle tower and Honmaru Palace burned down on the eve of the Southwest War in 1877 (Meiji 10), this ginkgo tree was also burned down. The current ginkgo tree is a new bud that grew after the fire.
This is a grassland of about 1 km located on the Aso Surrounding Scenic Line. The magnificent scenery created by the Mt. Hatoe in the background and the pond formed by rainwater. You can experience the colorful four seasons here, from the green grass in the summer to the fantastic white snow in the winter.
