What to expect

Kamikochi is a tourist resort and summer resort located in the upper reaches of the Azusa River in the southern part of the Hida Mountains in western Nagano Prefecture, Japan. It is surrounded by the Hotaka Mountain Range, Yakedake, and the Jounen Mountains. It is about 1,500 meters above sea level and is part of the Chubu Sangaku National Park. It is designated as a "Special Place of Scenic Beauty" and a "Special Natural Monument". There are hot springs here, and it is also a base for climbing Hotakadake and Yari-dake. It became known to the world after the introduction of British missionary Weston in the 19th century, and is also known by many mountaineers as a famous scenic spot in Japan. Kamikochi is usually open to tourists from mid-April to mid-November. In winter, Kamikochi is inaccessible due to heavy snow.
