- The Takayama Festival is one of the three most beautiful festivals in Japan. Among them, the Sanno Festival, which heralds the arrival of spring in Takayama, is the annual festival of Hie Shrine (Sanno-sama), the guardian deity of the southern half of the old Takayama castle town.
- The festival floats, designated as Important Tangible Folk Cultural Properties of Japan, are pulled by 11 floats, and the procession of over several hundred floats is a spectacular sight.
