Overview
  • Murakami City is located at the northernmost tip of Niigata Prefecture facing the Sea of Japan.
  • The old town located in the center of the city is the oldest castle town in the prefecture, developed in the 1600s. Some stores in the machiya style, old temples, and historical buildings registered as tangible cultural properties by the national government still remain.
  • The city tour will focus on the “fermentation culture” of Murakami, including the salmon food culture that Murakami City has developed over its long history and the soy sauce made in wooden vats that still remains in the port of call of the Kitamae-bune (a shipping port on the Kitamae Line).
  • During a special visit to the salmon “cutting ceremony” and the “wooden vat soy sauce brewery,” a commentator will be the inheritor of Murakami City's food culture. At Iyoboya Kaikan, the first salmon museum in Japan, you will see the explanation by a curator, the ecology of salmon, and the history of salmon in Murakami.
