What to expect

Otsu Castle was built around 1586 (Tensho 14) in the area around Hamaotsu in Otsu City, following the abandonment of Sakamoto Castle, which was associated with Akechi Mitsuhide, by order of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. During the Battle of Sekigahara, Kyogoku Takatsugu, who belonged to the Eastern Army, barricaded himself in the castle, holding back Mori Motoyasu, Tachibana Muneshige, and others from the Western Army, in what is known as the "Battle of Otsu Castle." On this tour, a local guide will show you the historical sites and places associated with Otsu Castle that remain in the city, as well as the remains of the main castle and moat. This tour also touches on the history and culture of Otsu-juku (Otsu Hyakumachi), which changed from a castle town to a post town along with the footsteps of Otsu Castle. [Walking distance: approx. 4.5km]
