Set in the Warring States period, it centers on the conflict between Takeda Shingen and Nagao (Uesugi) Kenshin, while also depicting the exploits of Naoe Yamashiro-no-suke (Yamashiro-no-kami) and Yamamoto Kansuke. The evening performance features "Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura" (Yoshitsune and the Thousand Cherry Trees), one of the most popular Kabuki plays in Japan. This play portrays the tragedy of the supposedly surviving Heike warriors and those caught up in their fate, triggered by Minamoto no Yoshitsune's flight from Kyoto after the Genpei War.
