- Overview

Miyama Gassho Village is located in Nantan City, on the outskirts of Kyoto. It preserves Japan's most primitive rural tribal scenery and is known as one of the three major "Gassho-style" settlements in Japan, along with Shirakawa-go in Gifu Prefecture and Ouchi-juku in Fukushima Prefecture. Many thatched houses have been restored here, making it an important area for the preservation of traditional buildings.
There are two legends about "Amanohashidate". One says that if you stood on the hill between Hiryukan at the southern end of the sandbar and Kasamatsu Park at the northern end, bent down, and looked back from your crotch, the long sandbar would look like a bridge extending obliquely to the sky, and thus the name was acquired under this special circumstance.
