In the Kamakura period, the Japanese royal family generally respected Buddhism, and Nanzenji Temple was named the first of the five Buddhist Zen temples in Kyoto by Emperor Go-Daigo. A section of the Lake Biwa Canal is located in Nanzenji Temple.
