Toshogu Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo Shogunate, and is also one of Japan's most significant historical and cultural sites. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site "Shrines and Temples of Nikko." Toshogu Shrine was established in 1617 by Tokugawa Hidetada, the second shogun and son of Tokugawa Ieyasu, and was expanded in 1636 by the third shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu, to its present grandeur. The shrine is built in the "gongen-zukuri" architectural style, which blends elements of Shinto and Buddhism, symbolizing Tokugawa Ieyasu's divine status as the "Toshogu Daigongen." The three must-see carvings at Nikko Toshogu Shrine are: The Three Wise Monkeys: Located on the stable, the carvings of the three monkeys; The Sleeping Cat and The Elephant of Imagination
