HOKUSAI — The Most Famous Japanese Artist in the World The iconic image of the “Great Wave,” known across the globe, is a masterpiece often mentioned alongside Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. There is hardly anyone who hasn't seen it. Katsushika Hokusai, widely regarded as the most famous Japanese artist, left behind more than 30,000 works over his 90-year life. He moved 93 times and used over 30 different art names (gō), reflecting a life of extraordinary freedom and creativity. Despite living in a time when only brushes and paper were available, Hokusai's revolutionary expressions are often cited as the roots of Japan’s globally influential entertainment culture — manga and anime. This exhibition is made possible through the full cooperation of Mitsuru Uragami (Uragami Sokyudo), who holds an unparalleled collection of Hokusai Manga, totaling 1,700 volumes. On display will be all 15 volumes of the Hokusai Manga series, illustrations from various richly illustrated novels (yomihon), the world-famous The Gr
