    • 活動内容 Until the summer of 2020 the picture book café “Mucchi’s Café” was operating in Koenji, but on November 6 they opened in their newly relocated location about 10 minutes on foot from JR Nishi-Ogikubo Station.

Mucchi’s concept is “A picture book café that adults can also enjoy.” Their new location has counter and table seating for a total of 12 seats. In the café there is an extensive range of picture books to peruse, from nostalgic books that many adults will have enjoyed when they were children to recent publications. Customers can also enjoy the surroundings as there are moveable walls that make the space more suitable for author exhibitions and such than before.

Even the menu features items that weren’t available at their past location, such as fluffy pancakes and daily-changing meal options. Here you can really enjoy a leisurely time. In the neighborhood there are variety stores and other shops that have picture books, so about stopping by Mucchi’s when out on a stroll in the area?

*When entering the café, please follow guidelines to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, such as wearing a mask and using hand sanitizer/disinfectant. If you feel unwell, please refrain from visiting.

    • 活動内容 “Kinnikuman” is a comical pro-wrestling manga beloved in Japan for over 40 years. In January 2021, a Kinnikuman official shop and gallery joint space “Kinnikuman Kin29Shop-Neo Koenji” opened in Koenji’s Pal Shopping Street.

This is the 4th official Kinnikuman shop in Japan, following the Ikebukuro, Odaiba, and Osaka locations. They sell T-shirts, hats and other apparel, as well as original goods. Fitting with Koenji’s music culture, the Kinnikuman character “Stecase King”, a robot-like stereo cassette deck character, is the main character of the Koenji shop. Here you can buy certain rock and pop design goods limited to the Koenji store. When you visit, you may want to take a commemorative photo with the life-size Kinnikuman figures at the entrance.

*To prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19), please wear a mask and disinfect your hands when entering the store. If you feel unwell, please refrain from entering.

    • 活動内容 One of the “big 4” festivals in Koenji, “Koenji Engei Festival” this year begins February 12, and will take place at 20 different venues including a theater, temples, shrines, and others in Koenji.
Rakugo (traditional Japanese comic storytelling), manzai (comedy duos), kamikiri (paper silhouette cutting) and other Japanese style entertainment can be enjoyed at this event, now in its 11th year. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, this year will be a smaller scale than usual, also with online performances for the first time. Live events will take care to avoid the 3 C’s: closed spaces, crowded places, and close-contact settings.

At Gallery Asobiba in Za-Koenji Theater, a special related exhibition will be held, “We won’t lose to Corona! Engei Festival Exhibition”. Messages and autographs from the Engei performers will be on display and auctioned off for charity. Collected donations will be sent to Suginami Ward’s “COVID-19 Prevention Measures Contribution” to be used for funding hospital beds and as support to medical institutions, as well as expenses for masks, disinfectant, and other necessary items.

This year’s Engei Matsuri was decided to move forward in spite of the pandemic. Of course, we all hope opportunities to come in contact directly with Japanese performing arts will increase as things get better.

*In order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, please wear a mask, disinfect your hands, take your temperature etc. when entering the venues. If you feel unwell, please refrain from entering.

Event dates: February 12 through Feb. 21
Venues: Koenji theater, temples, shrines, and others (20 venues in total)

    • 活動内容 Mabashi Inari Shrine is located in between Asagaya and Koenji Stations. The stone torii gate at the entrance is a rare sight among Shinto shrines, with its carved “rising dragon” and “descending dragon” motif. It is said that touching the rising dragon will boost your luck. The large 75 centimeter chimes hanging from the Zuishinmon gate are famous and among the largest in Tokyo. There is also a small brook and lots of greenery, so a visit to Mabashi Inari Shrine is especially recommended when you want to clear your mind.

    • 活動内容 The website that introduces “sento” public bathhouses in Tokyo’s Suginami Ward, “Suginami Sento,” has been newly updated.

There is reportedly a “sento boom” going on now centered among young people in Japan. With features on TV and in magazines and information being dispersed on social media sites, the image of sento has been refreshed from neighborhood public bathhouses to community spots that young people are intentionally seeking out.

There are 19 sento in Suginami affiliated with the “Suginami Bathhouse Association”, and to put it briefly each of them have their own individual traits and charms. The renewed website has many photos of these bathhouses, and introduces them in great detail.

If you ever have an opportunity to book accommodation in Suginami, please use the “Suginami Sento” site to find a sento near you for a rejuvenating experience.

*In order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, please follow safety guidelines such as wearing masks and disinfecting your hands upon entry of the bathhouses. If you feel unwell, please refrain from entering.

    • 活動内容 The illumination at the south exit square of Koenji Station will be lit up this year as well. This marks the 8th year of the illumination. In a usual year there is a festival held when the lights are first turned on with music by wind ensembles from local schools and a sake toast, but that has been canceled this year, of course, in order to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Instead, local shop staff gathered in small numbers the first time the lights were turned on.
The 2 main trees are a simple and gentle yellow, while the smaller trees and plants are lit up in blue to show gratitude to medical workers.

*When going to see the illumination, in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19 please follow necessary guidelines such as wearing a mask, keeping social distance of 1-2 meters apart, and refraining from going out altogether when you feel unwell.

    • 活動内容 The Asagaya Pearl Center shopping street starts from right in front of JR Asagaya Station, and goes about 700 meters to Omekaido Road, with over 240 shops lined up along the way. This covered pedestrian-only shopping street is also the main venue for the “Asagaya Tanabata Festival” held in August, bustling with tourists who come to see a variety of papier-mache decorations hanging from the ceiling. Other popular events held here are the “Asagaya Jazz Streets” festival and a Halloween costume contest. In addition to the obvious fresh food products, restaurants/cafes, and clothing stores, sweets are also a specialty of the Pearl Center including Japanese sweets such as “taiyaki” hot off the grill as well as western sweets, both which make great souvenirs. Whatever you are looking for, you can find it somewhere in the Pearl Center.
