- Experience kayaking in the Sea of Okhotsk, where the drift ice reaches its southernmost point in Abashiri! Enjoy the breathtaking views of the drift ice while gazing at the snow-capped Shiretoko Mountains in the distance, and immerse yourself in the unique charm of this ice-filled sea that can’t be found anywhere else. The coastal area of Abashiri City is a rocky reef zone and a source of Rishiri kelp. The kelp forests, enriched by the minerals carried by the drift ice, are home to sea urchins. If you're lucky, you might even spot local fishermen harvesting sea urchins! After kayaking, you’ll enjoy a mini sea urchin rice bowl made with fresh Abashiri sea urchins.
