    • 活动详情 As Zenpukuji Sakura Park is good park to enjoy being barefoot, it is also known as the “barefoot oasis”. There are large art objects of a footprint, a head and hands, as well as a bumpy foot path that serves to stimulate the soles of your feet as you walk over it. It’s a very compact park, but it is a good place to enjoy your time while stimulating the 5 senses.

    • 活动详情 “A-san no Niwa” is a small park located in a peaceful residential area about 10 minutes or so from Asagaya Station on foot. The name means “A-san’s garden”, and “A-san” is said to be whoever comes to visit the park. Therefor this is your park if you go there, to be shared with everyone who goes there.

“A-san no Niwa” is the former location of a house from the early Show era (1920’s). It was an old house that with lots of greenery and a beautiful garden that was a relic of life and culture of Suginami’s past. The house was known by local people as “Totoro’s house”, since it looked like a house that Totoro, from Hayao Miyazaki’s animated classic “My Neighbor Totoro”, would want to live in, and often introduced as such. Suginami Ward planned to keep the old house preserved and designate its grounds as a park, but sadly the house burned down in a fire in February, 2009.

After that Hayao Miyazaki himself was commissioned to design a new park on the grounds, and A-san no Niwa was completed in July, 2010.

A small “house” was built on the site that functions as a public restroom and emergency supplies storage, and its orange roof tiles, light brown walls, and white window frames are a tribute to the original Totoro house. You can feel the passage of time with the original hand pump water well and foundation of the original house that remain on the site, surrounded by a beautiful garden harkening back to the garden that was originally there. Here you will find new symbols of the park: magnolia, sawtooth oak, and fragrant olive trees as well as many flowers that paint the garden different colors throughout the seasons.

    • 活动详情 Momoi Harappa Park is a large, open, grassy park located less than 20 minutes on foot (5 minutes by bus) from Ogikubo and Nishi-Ogikubo Stations on the Chuo Line. As a large flat plain, the distance around the field is about 500 meters. It is a great spot or walking or jogging, since there is a walkway around the park with the distance written in white every 50 meters. There is also a large event called “Suginami Festa” held in the park every fall since 2013, which features a stage show, food stalls, baked goods and product sales.

The large park is actually the former site of the Nakajima Aircraft Company, that manufactured airplane engines for the famous “Zero” fighter planes during the second World War. Postwar the factory was used by the Nissan Motor Company, where Japan’s first rocket was developed. After that the factory moved and the large grounds were left open, and the large field was established as Momoi Harappa Park in 2011.

Not only has this large park served as daily recreation and relaxation for people living in the area, but it is also a large open space surrounded by a fire station, police station, and hospital, making it an effective evacuation site in the event of a disaster.

    • 活动详情 The green space along the Zenpukuji-gawa River is well known as a place to enjoy the sakura cherry blossoms in spring. This green space spreads out over a span of about 4.2km in the middle of the river’s length, so the promenade here makes a great place for a leisurely walk. With its trees and shrubs and grassy space as well as playground equipment in the open spaces, it is also a recommended place for families. In addition to the sakura trees, you’ll also find magnolia, dogwood, crape myrtle, and many other types of trees and flowers that highlight the changing of the seasons. Zenpukuji River Green Space makes a great course for a stroll or jogging.

As the annex of the Suginami Historical Museum, here there are different exhibitions including a focus on hands-on exhibits for local Suginami residents. The exhibitions take place mostly in the west wing of the annex, with one exhibit room on each the 1st and 2nd floors. Entrance is free of charge. The Suginami Historical Museum Annex is a nice place to freely stop by at while shopping or taking a stroll in the area.

    • 活动详情 This park was made on the grounds of the former national Meteorological Research Institute after it relocated to Tsukuba. In the same location Japan’s only shrine dedicated to weather stood, but along with the Institute’s relocation, the weather shrine was also relocated to the grounds of Hikawa Shrine in Koenji. The name “Mabashi” supposedly comes from the old name of this area (the area in between Asagaya and Koenji). In the center of the grounds is a large baseball field-shaped “multipurpose ground” which aside from children using it to play baseball and other sports is also used for regional events. At the “Four Seasons Area” many trees have been planted that change according to the season. At the “Child Area” there is playground equipment for kids and a small stream, and also a pond and a small babbling brook at the “Waterside Area”. The “Sparse Woods Area” is surrounded by a grove of mixed trees. At Mabashi Park you can surely enjoy a variety of nature and settings in this spacious place.

    • 活动详情 There is a large “keyaki” Japanese zelkova tree that is the landmark of Sakanoue no Keyaki Park (which literally means “Zelkova tree park upon a hill”). This tree is popularly known by local residents as “Totoro’s Tree” due to it being such a large tree that it stands out like Totoro’s tree in the Ghibli film “My Neighbor Totoro”. The trunk of this tree has the largest circumference of any tree in Suginami Ward. It’s located in a residential neighborhood about 8 minutes from Nishi-Ogikubo Station, and there are benches so it is a good place spend a relaxing time. In order to protect their beloved “Totoro’s Tree”, local residents collected signatures and Suginami then acquired the land and opened the park in 2010.

    • 活动详情 Zenpukuji Park is a park where you can enjoy the large Zenpukuji Pond surrounded by many trees, located about 18 minutes on foot from the north exit of Nishi-Ogikubo Station. In the spring many cherry blossoms bloom, so many people enjoy “ohanami” sakura viewing here. In winter some beautiful birds also visit.
The large pond is divided into two parts, the upper pond and lower pond. The upper pond is the larger one and is included among what are called the Big Three Ponds of Musashino, along with Inokashira Pond (at Inokashira Park) and Sanpoji Pond (at Shakuji Park).
The upper pond also has rental boats available on weekends and holidays except in winter. You can choose between rowboats and pedal boats. There is also a promenade around the pond, great for dog-walking or jogging. The lower pond is filled with reeds and aquatic plants, making for a quiet atmosphere great for spotting birds.
Thinking about “Tokyo” conjures up images of high-rise buildings and business districts, but having a park like this full of nature and loved by local residents is one of the charms of Suginami.

    • 活动详情 The Koenji “Mural City Project” started in 2016 with a desire to “make Koenji an art city”. Various artists designed 7 wall murals that you can enjoy spotting around Koenji. Among these a very popular photo spot is a wall at a parking lot on the south side of Koenji, about a 3-minute walk along the train tracks from the station. The mural features a brightly colored pop art style with a woman’s face that particularly stands out. Mural art like this is very unique yet it has become a familiar site in Koenji. Please enjoy finding your favorite art when you have a chance to explore this area.
