- Kyoto once flourished as the capital of Japan for over a thousand years until Tokyo became the capital and the emperor moved there in 1868. There are plenty of places worth visiting such as Arashiyama, which used to be the aristocrats’ summer resort, magnificent temples with delicate gardens, the alleys where geisha girls in kimono stroll, and the celebrated shrine with a tunnel of a thousand vermillion torii gates.
