Fugaku Wind Cave

富岳風穴

Description

The cave was used as a natural refrigeration storage when the refrigerator was not yet invented. The average temperature in the cave is about 3℃, and this 201-meter deep, 8.7-meter high lateral cave is a designated natural monument. The basalt rock wall has a sound-absorbing characteristic, so sound does not echo inside the cave. A must-attend 15-minute cave tour will take you to see icicles that never melt even in summer, lava beds, and ropy lava. In 2012, a shop (Mori no Eki) was opened as part of the forest revitalization effort, and you can purchase cold protective gear for cave tours as well as local confectionary, Koshu wines, local sake rice wine from the Yamanashi and Shizuoka prefectures, and other goods. The shop also has a food court where you can enjoy local, tasty food, such as Fujimiya Yakisoba noodles and Yoshida Udon noodles. Take a local bus for 30 minutes from the Kawaguchiko Station. You can also take a Retro bus that circulates the Kawaguchiko Lake area to the wind cave.
