With Hayama to the east and Mt. Gassan to the south, Okura village is the least populated village in Yamagata prefecture.
In winter, more than 3m of heavy snow accumulates in the beech forests, and over thousands of years it becomes abundant spring water that irrigates the rice terraces and grows fragrant wasabi.
They grow wasabi without the use of any pesticides or chemical fertilizers, and they also insist on using no additives in their processing, producing with the motto of "food safety first".
