    • 이벤트 상세 “A-san no Niwa” is a small park located in a peaceful residential area about 10 minutes or so from Asagaya Station on foot. The name means “A-san’s garden”, and “A-san” is said to be whoever comes to visit the park. Therefor this is your park if you go there, to be shared with everyone who goes there.

“A-san no Niwa” is the former location of a house from the early Show era (1920’s). It was an old house that with lots of greenery and a beautiful garden that was a relic of life and culture of Suginami’s past. The house was known by local people as “Totoro’s house”, since it looked like a house that Totoro, from Hayao Miyazaki’s animated classic “My Neighbor Totoro”, would want to live in, and often introduced as such. Suginami Ward planned to keep the old house preserved and designate its grounds as a park, but sadly the house burned down in a fire in February, 2009.

After that Hayao Miyazaki himself was commissioned to design a new park on the grounds, and A-san no Niwa was completed in July, 2010.

A small “house” was built on the site that functions as a public restroom and emergency supplies storage, and its orange roof tiles, light brown walls, and white window frames are a tribute to the original Totoro house. You can feel the passage of time with the original hand pump water well and foundation of the original house that remain on the site, surrounded by a beautiful garden harkening back to the garden that was originally there. Here you will find new symbols of the park: magnolia, sawtooth oak, and fragrant olive trees as well as many flowers that paint the garden different colors throughout the seasons.

    • 이벤트 상세 Momoi Harappa Park is a large, open, grassy park located less than 20 minutes on foot (5 minutes by bus) from Ogikubo and Nishi-Ogikubo Stations on the Chuo Line. As a large flat plain, the distance around the field is about 500 meters. It is a great spot or walking or jogging, since there is a walkway around the park with the distance written in white every 50 meters. There is also a large event called “Suginami Festa” held in the park every fall since 2013, which features a stage show, food stalls, baked goods and product sales.

The large park is actually the former site of the Nakajima Aircraft Company, that manufactured airplane engines for the famous “Zero” fighter planes during the second World War. Postwar the factory was used by the Nissan Motor Company, where Japan’s first rocket was developed. After that the factory moved and the large grounds were left open, and the large field was established as Momoi Harappa Park in 2011.

Not only has this large park served as daily recreation and relaxation for people living in the area, but it is also a large open space surrounded by a fire station, police station, and hospital, making it an effective evacuation site in the event of a disaster.

    • 이벤트 상세 This park was made on the grounds of the former national Meteorological Research Institute after it relocated to Tsukuba. In the same location Japan’s only shrine dedicated to weather stood, but along with the Institute’s relocation, the weather shrine was also relocated to the grounds of Hikawa Shrine in Koenji. The name “Mabashi” supposedly comes from the old name of this area (the area in between Asagaya and Koenji). In the center of the grounds is a large baseball field-shaped “multipurpose ground” which aside from children using it to play baseball and other sports is also used for regional events. At the “Four Seasons Area” many trees have been planted that change according to the season. At the “Child Area” there is playground equipment for kids and a small stream, and also a pond and a small babbling brook at the “Waterside Area”. The “Sparse Woods Area” is surrounded by a grove of mixed trees. At Mabashi Park you can surely enjoy a variety of nature and settings in this spacious place.
