According to recent historical research and advances in the academic study of Shugen-do, Mt. Inunaki is now considered the birthplace of Shugen-do. Goma is a ritual practice in Shingon Buddhism, a form of esoteric Japanese Buddhism. Purpose: Goma is performed to purify negative karma, remove obstacles, and fulfill wishes. Setting: The ritual takes place in front of a sacred fire, often outdoors or in a temple. Process: Participants write their wishes on wooden sticks called Gomaki. These sticks, along with other offerings like rice, incense, herbs, and oils, are placed in the fire. The fire represents the wisdom of the deity Fudo Myoo (Acala), who burns away impurities. Participants recite mantras and prayers while the fire burns.
