Uraga no Watashi

浦賀の渡し船

Description

Watashi-bune or the ferry service was started around 1725, and even now, the boat is affectionately called ”Pon-pon sen.” The red-toned ferry boat, with a total length of 9.5 meters, is used as a watashi-bune boat to travel back and forth between the towns on the east to those on the west by the sea routes within the port of Uraga. During the Edo period (1603–1868), the ferry boat was essential to people's lives. Thus, the ferryman's livelihood and the maintenance of the boat were supported by the people in Uraga and the residents of neighboring towns.
