On the 15th and 16th of October, the neighborhood around Nerima Station’s North Exit will get lively when the Nerima Anime Carnival 2016 takes place over the course of two days. A variety of events will be held, such as meet and greets with famous voice actors and production teams of anime masterpieces like Dragon Ball, Magic-Kyun! Renaissance, Lupin the Third, and Maho Girls PreCure!
The 10th Anniversary of the Nerima Anime Carnival!
Nerima is the birthplace of Japan’s very first feature-length anime for cinemas, The Legend of the White Serpent, made by Toho. It is also the place of production for the incredibly famous Astro Boy, making Nerima basically the cradle of Japanese anime as we know it today. This is precisely why around 80 different animation studios and related businesses are gathered in the area even today, staying true to Nerima’s anime legacy.
The Nerima Anime Carnival is one of the most representative events of Japanese anime, an integral part of the country’s contemporary culture that is known and loved all over the world. This year marks the Carnival’s 10th anniversary.
The motto of 2016 is “Enjoying Legends, Enjoying Frontiers!” A bit ominous, it likely refers to the many luminaries of anime that are part of the event, from producers to voice actors. And frontiers? While some might be reminded of Gundam – Sunrise, the company behind the Gundam series and the aforementioned Magic-Kyun! Renaissance will of course be present – it may also be a reference to the constant evolution of the genre, as well as its cross-generational charm. You’re sure to find anime fans of all ages in Nerima during the carnival!
The highlight of Saturday, the 15th of October, takes place at 3:00 p.m.: the start of the Dragon Ball program. Besides screenings and talks from the Dragon Ball team, there’s also a meet and greet with the one and only Masako Nozawa, the famous voice actress of Goku himself. This is the perfect opportunity to try uncovering the secret of Dragon Ball’s success – despite running for decades, the series is as popular as ever, uniting passionate fans of various generations!
On Sunday, the 16th of October, a special Magic-Kyun! Renaissance event will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. – the anime just started airing in October. Kohana Aigasaki’s Sayaka Senbongi, the voice actress of Magic-Kyun!’s heroine, is scheduled to appear on stage. Not only die-hard fans are looking forward to this unique opportunity for a meet and greet!
At 4:30 p.m. of the same day, a special Lupin the Third event takes place, celebrating the anime’s newest series with Kazuhide Tomonaga as the special guest. He is Lupin the Third’s Chief Director for the newest installment of the well-beloved franchise, which will be screened along with the second installment of the popular anime, Lupin the Third Part II.
Meanwhile, the Maho Girls PreCure! show-stage doesn’t only offer a vivid program with various events but also an Anime Marche featuring booths from both Wacom and Broccoli – this is the perfect opportunity to get your hands on both merchandise and the necessary tools to get creative yourself!
While the advance ticket reservation for specific events is already over, tickets can still be obtained on the two days of the Nerima Anime Carnival from 9:00 a.m. They are available at the information tent inside the Heisei Azalea Park. (Up to two tickets per person.)
Besides meet and greets, various talks, and anime screenings, you’ll also get the chance of experiencing what hand-drawing an anime scene feels like at a workshop called AnimeSchool@Nerima. When you’re getting tired, enjoy a snack at one of the many food stalls by the local residents who are more than happy to welcome fans from Japan and all around the world to their own Nerima Anime Carnival 2016!
