It opened in Marunouchi, Tokyo in spring of 2010. A five-minute walk from JR Tokyo Station. It has held three periodic displays of modern art covering from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. The red brick building is the reproduction of Mitsubishi Ichiban Museum (designed by Josiah Conder) that was built by Mitsubishi in 1894. The collections mainly include the Western art works from the late 19th century which is around the same age when the building was built, and it handles the works of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Odilon Redon and Felix Vallotton. In the building, there are a musical café bar, Café1894; a museum shop, Store1894; and the Marunouchi history-experiencing space, Archive Room. The director is Akiya Takahashi. The Tokyo Station Gallery, located in front of the Marunouchi North Exit of the JR Tokyo Station, is probably the most convenient art gallery in Japan to access by the public transportation. It was in 1998 when this art gallery opened its doors on the premises of the majestic Tokyo Station Marunouchi Building, which speaks of the modern history of Japan. It reopened in the fall of 2012 when the renovation and restoration work for the station building was completed. The exhibition floors comprises the modern third floor and the second floor, where a historical ambiance can be felt. The highlight of the gallery is the exhibition room on the second floor where the brick walls originally constructed are made the best use of, and this is the only place you can see the brick walls that are older than 100 years in one place. You can enjoy an architectural attraction in addition to exhibitions with various themes. The circular corridor on the second floor, from which you can observe the traffic of people within the station, will not let you feel bored. In the museum shop on the second floor, original goods you can only see at the art gallery located within the Tokyo Station can be purchased.

The Crafts Gallery was opened in 1977 as an annex to the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art. It is located in the Kitanomaru Park, which is close to the Imperial Palace. The gallery houses 3,400 items of Japanese and foreign modern and contemporary works, including ceramics, glassware, lacquer crafts, dyed and woven textiles, dolls and metalworks as well as works of industrial and graphic designs. Exhibitions of the works from the gallery's own collection as well as planned exhibitions are held all. During the exhibitions, the gallery also holds a special event, ”Touch & Talk,” which allows visitors of all ages to participate and handle the craftworks (from 2:00 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays). The Meiji-era Western-style brick building, designed by a military engineer, Yaushi Tamura, was built in March 1910 as the headquarters of the Imperial Guard of the Japanese army. It is one of the most important cultural assets as it was designed by a Japanese engineer and is still standing.

The museum opened in 1952 as Japan's first national art museum, and it is one of the leading museums, with a total exhibition space of 4,500 square meters. In its owned collection exhibition, it displays 200 artworks in a wide range of genres, such as oil paintings, Japanese-style paintings, and sculptures. It houses many pieces of designated Important Cultural Properties and displays artworks from Japan's modern artists, such as Shunso Hishida, Gyokudo Kawai, and Kagaku Murakami. L’art et Mikuni, a French-Italian restaurant was opened when the museum was renovated in 2012. The cuisine is created in collaboration with each exhibition. You can enjoy a panoramic view of the greens of the Imperial Palace from “A room with a view,” the rooftop terrace or find original artistic goods at the museum shop.

The National Film Center at the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art is devoted to collecting, storing, and restoring movies and films, as well as their related materials. The center houses Japanese movie films from the very early days, particularly ”Momiji-gari,” which filmed a kabuki theater performed by the 9th Danjuro Ichilawa and the 5th Kikugoro Onoe; ”Shigeki Nanko Ketsubetsu” is a collection of Matsunosuke Onoe’s live stage performances, which the Prince Regent (later Emperor Showa) viewed in 1921; and ”The Funeral of Kobayashi Tomijiro,” which recorded the funeral for the founder of the Lion Corporation, which is known for its toothpaste. These three are designated as national important cultural properties. ”The History of Japanese Cinema” is a permanent exhibition where you can view valuable movie and film materials, such as old projectors, movie posters, and magazines. There is a large and a small hall where you can enjoy viewing various films.

Mitsuo Aida is widely known as a poet and calligrapher who expressed simple phrases in his own unique style. His works depicting the weakness of human beings and their over-dependence on others remain highly popular among people of all ages even after his death. The museum is designed to help visitors enjoy his works and perceive the world of nature that Mr. Aida loved in his lifetime. A new exhibition is held every three months, and you can feel his ”words of life” anytime in the museum. The cafe linked with the main building offers a peaceful atmosphere that you can feel after seeing the works. You can enter the museum shop for free, and it has a variety of goods such as postcards, large square poetry cards and books; daily tear-off calendars with the lines of Mitsuo Aida are the most popular items.
