This museum houses some 1,800 art works collected by businessman Seijiro Matsuoka during his lifetime. Matsuoka founded the museum so that his personal artworks could be enjoyed by the public. The collection covers a variety of genres: Oriental ceramics, modern and contemporary Japanese paintings, Chinese paintings and calligraphy, modern French paintings, Victorian paintings, ancient Oriental sculpture such as Buddha statues and Hindi josses, modern sculpture and ancient Oriental art. All of these works are open to the general public and reflect the founder's pursuit of beauty regardless of artistic genre. Unlike other major art museums in Japan, this one does not post guards inside the building; it also offers a service whereby visitors can sketch the works in pencil as well as take photos (please refrain from using a flash, and be sure to disable any notification sounds). A six-minute walk from Shiroganedai Station on the Namboku Line and Toei Mita Line brings you to the Matsuoka Museum.
