3.Ikefukurou Statue

Ikefukuro or Ike-fukuro is a stone statue erected in September 1987. It was created because there was no outstanding meeting spot in the Inkebukuro Station when the JR (Japan Railways) was launched in March of the same year. Fukuro (an owl) is a pun on the ”bukuro” part of the word ”Ikebukuro.” Initially, the station staff tried to carve an owl out of wood, only to fail. They contracted the work to a masonry company in the Tochigi prefecture, which completed it. The history of the Ikebukuro area is inscribed on the post placed just behind the statue. In 2006, a new statue of three little owls was placed next to the original one. The three-little-owl statue was a generous donation from the 5th-grade class-1 pupils of the nearby Ikebukuro Dai-san (No. 3) Elementary School. Both statues are now popular as the ”parent and baby owls.” If you take the JR Ikebukuro Station North Exit and turn right following the sign ”Ikefukuro” in front of you, you will find the Ikefukuro statues. Alternatively, if you walk towards the Higashi-guchi (East) Exit from the Central Exit, turn left onto Cherry Road, and then continue, you will also find them. Either way takes about one minute.

4.Sunshine City

Sunshine City opened in 1978 as the core project for development of the Ikebukuro area, and as the first large-scale private-sector initiative. In addition to shops and restaurants, there are many amusement facilities such as an observatory and aquarium. Furthermore, it also includes apartments and hotels, creating a space that contains many of the functions needed for urban life. The Sunshine Aquarium has a history of over 30 years as an urban aquarium, and there are popular performances of sea lions, pelicans and penguins that are held each day. The Konica Minolta Planetarium was renovated in December 2015. Under the theme of ”liberation of the senses”, it features full-dome projection of high-resolution full-color CG motion imaging accompanied by music and scents, making for an amazingly realistic experience. It is a 3-minute walk from Higashi-Ikebukuro Station on the Tokyo Metro Yurakucho Line, .

5.Sunshine Aquarium

Designed with ”Oasis in the Sky” as a concept, the Sunshine Aquarium is an extraordinary metropolitan aquarium in a high-rise, and you can experience the joy, comfort, peacefulness, and relaxation of an aquarium all at once. Its easy access is another attractive point as it is a 5-minute walk from the Higashi-ikebukuro Station on the Tokyo Metro Yurakucho Line or a 10-minute walk from the Ikebukuro Station on several lines. Along with the observation of various creatures, the aquarium offers an entertaining space with a seal show, underwater performance show, and a feeding-time show of seals, pelicans, and penguins. There are also shops selling aquarium-original items and a stylish cafe that gives an impression of a resort beach. This is an aquarium that people of all ages-from children to the elderly-can enjoy.

8.Rikugien Gardens

Rikugien is a landscape garden created in 1695 by Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu, soba-yonin (chamberlain and aide) of fifth Edo shogun Tsunayoshi, who gifted the land. It took seven years for Yoshiyasu to complete the spacious garden, which was designed to allow appreciation while freely circling the pond. The garden area, originally flat, became an atmospheric scene of Japanese aestheticism with spacious ponds reflecting verdant trees, and tsukiyama or raised mountains symbolizing the relationship between man and woman. Weeping cherry trees blooming around late March are another draw. Edohigan (Cerasus spachiana var. spachiana forma ascendens) is a genus of Cerasus, known as weeping cherry, with blossoms cascading like waterfalls on pliant branches. The garden's significant artistic value earned its selection as a Special Site of Scenic Beauty. Guided tours are available for overseas visitors. A seven-minute walk from Komagome Station on either the JR Yamanote or Tokyo Metro Namboku Line.
