1.Sankeien Garden

1.Sankeien Garden

The garden was created and opened in 1906 by Sankei Hara, who made a fortune in a silk-reeling industry and from silk trading. Inside the spacious Japanese garden, 175,000 square meters in area, the old historical buildings moved from Kyoto and Kamakura (ten of National Important Cultural Properties, three of Tangible Cultural Properties designated by Yokohama) are neatly placed.

You can enjoy the historical buildings such as the three-story pagoda from old Tomyoji, tea houses and houses with steep rafter roofs along with views in harmony with nature of the seasons such as plums, cherry blossoms, lotus flowers and autumn leaves. The garden also has the Sankei Memorial Hall where items such as art works that are exhibited, chaya (Japanese style cafe) and a museum shop can be enjoyed.

It is about a 10-minute City Bus (Line No.58, No.99 or No.101) ride from JR Negishi Station and about a 10-minute walk from the Honmoku bus stop. It is a 15-minute City Bus (Line No.8 or No.148) ride from the Yamashita-cho bus stop near the Exit 0000004 of the Motomachi-chukagai Station of the Minato Mirai Line and another 5-minute walk after getting off at the Honmoku-sankeien-mae bus stop.

2.Yokohama Minato Mirai 21

2.Yokohama Minato Mirai 21

The Minato Mirai 21 area received a Minister of Construction Prize in the Urban Landscape Award in 1997 as one of the top 100 Urban Landscapes; the area’s taking an initiative in forming a harmonized, high-quality, and attractive urban cityscape was highly evaluated in its effort to create a new urban center in Yokohama by producing a characteristic skyline with super-high-rise construction technology, enhancing the pedestrian spaces, and utilizing the historical assets, such as the Red Brick Warehouse.

It is an urban space where you can spend a comfortable time in its open space that makes the best of its favorable waterfront location with the sea, the port, and the extensive sky. The facilities, such as office buildings, an amusement park, and department stores, create the beautiful cityscape and serve various purposes of leisure, shopping, date, business, satisfying intellectual curiosity, and tourism. The impressive night view, created by the lights of office buildings and the colorful, characteristic lights from the giant Ferris wheel named Cosmo Clock 21, is one of the area’s highlights. An ocean route by water bus and railway routes are available for access to the area.

The Kanazawa Bunko Museum was a private library when it was established around 1275 by Sanetoki Hojo, a samurai warrior in the mid-Kamakura Era. In 1990, it became a history museum for precious cultural artifacts and research studies related to the Kamakura Era.

Exhibits cover paintings, including portraits of successive Kanazawa Hojo warriors (Sanetoki, Akitoki, Sadaaki and Sadamasa); Buddhist sculptures using the Hojo clan warriors as motifs; and treasures such as crystal Gyoku-kemam (Buddhist ritual ornaments with beads), the only extant example in Japan and an Important Cultural Property. The museum also contains 13,000 books and ancient documents on history, politics, literature and religion; the 4,000 letters written by members of the Hojo clan and monks at Shomyo-ji Temple provide a glimpse into daily life during the Kamakura Era. A 12-minute walk from Kanazawa-bunko Station on the Keikyu Line brings you to the museum.

9.Hara Model Railway Museum

9.Hara Model Railway Museum

This museum invites the public to enjoy the massive amount of model trains and railway related items created or collected by well-known collector and creator of model trains Nobutaro Hara. Hara's models have two unique features. First one is that they are recreations of railway cars from not only Japan but also from Europe, the United States and other places, and the second one is that they are faithful to the originals.

The model trains actually draw power from overhead lines, run on iron rails with iron wheels, and even make the same sounds as real trains. Enjoy watching or controlling the 1:32 scale models. Covering 310 square meters, the elaborate dioramas in which they run constitute one of the largest such facilities in the world. The museum also displays many railway collectables besides model trains: the first tickets issued, antique railway toys and other rare items. A five-minute walk from JR Yokohama Station, or a two-minute walk from Shin-Takashima Station on the Minato-Mirai Line.
