What comes to mind when thinking of summer in Japan? The sea? Fireworks? Surely festivals! No, the keyword of summer is “Pikachu Outbreak!” It’s an annual event held in the city of Yokohama that is, as the name suggests, entirely about Pikachu! Yokohama City and The Pokémon Company collaborate to create a one-of-a-kind charm unique to Yokohama to strengthen the branding of Japan’s cities overseas and promote them to visitors. Yokohama, known for its beautiful sceneries and a leading tourist destination, also seeks to develop Minatomirai, the event’s venue – all that with an eye on the Tokyo Olympics 2020. It all started in 2014 and this year, 2018, the event celebrates its fifth birthday. More than 1,500 Pikachu bring fun and excitement to the hot and humid Japanese summer.

Look forward to popular shows and events such as the “Water Carnival,” a splashy event that cools visitors down with plenty of fun and water. Of course, the iconic Pikachu Parade that sees hundreds of Pikachu march and dance through Yokohama’s streets.

This year will also see the “Grand Eevee March” for the very first time, making it all about the adorable evolution-happy mascot that we have come to love so dearly. On top of that, the “Pikachu Ship Greeting” is also larger than last year, making this year’s Pikachu Outbreak especially amazing!
