What to expect

Explore the iconic island of Hashima, commonly known as Gunkanjima or Battleship Island. It was designated as a World Heritage Site of the Meiji Industrial Revolution for its huge impact on the cultural heritage of Japan. As one of the 500 and more uninhabited islands in Nagasaki, this site was once the symbol of rapid industrialization in Japan during the 20th century. Walk down its open grounds where abandoned buildings were left undisturbed for a long time. You'll also learn that this site was initially known for its undersea coal mines which were operated in the 1880s, before it was turned into a prison and stronghold during World War II. The area has been used as a filming location for many popular US-based production houses like Netflix, History Network, and the Science Channel.
