Noboribetsu / Lake Toya:Overview & History

Two spots near Sapporo, famous for hot springs. They're both under 2 hours away from Hokkaido by car. Express buses leaving Hokkaido make it easy to get here. Noboribetsu in particular is known for having sights only possible around its gushing hot springs: a "Hell Valley" with geothermic phenomena, and the hot pond "Oyunuma." From Toya Lake, a UNESCO-registered world geopark, you can see Mt. Yotei and Usu from a lake cruise or Silo Observatory. The hot springs of Toyako Onsen can be found primarily on the lake's southern shores, with numerous hand and foot baths for quick dips or hot spring inns with baths available to day-trip visitors.
