Sensyuan Sohonke is a Japanese confectionery store in Hokkaido. Its history can be traced back to 1860, when the founder Kichibei Sasaki, who was a feudal retainer of Akita, went over to Hokkaido and started selling sweets there, where people were rejoicing over the opening of the port under the Japan-U.S. Amity Treaty.
We sell many original Japanese and western confectionery. Ganso Yamaoyaji is a Japanese and western-blended rice cracker using butter and milk instead of water, and rice flour and flour in the batter. This is the result of the fast diffusion of western culture in Hakodate after the port was opened at the end of the samurai period. We also sell dorayaki (bean-paste pancake), which we take pride in the coarse sweet red bean paste; it is carefully made, taking three days to complete the red bean paste made from Akane-dainagon azuki bean in southern Hokkaido.
Our newly-opened Sensyuan Karyo is a casual store with the concept of showcasing the deliciousness of our special red bean paste made by Sensyuan Sohonke's artisan chefs. The store blends Sensyuan Sohonke's historical Japanese and western confectionery, including homemade bean paste, with a café menu, introducing a new world of Sensyuan Sohonke.
Access: From the central exit of JR Hakodate Station, go through the gate on the left (two minutes on foot). The store is at the right end of the building.
