Description

A historical castle town, Odawara, whose glory was once established by the Hojo clan.
It was there where Ninomiya Kinjiro was born, at the close of the Edo period. Kinjiro, who overcame many difficulties from childhood on his way to becoming a self-educated person, rescued scores of farming villages and feudal domains from the ravages of poverty, at the end of the Edo period. Kinjiro, demonstrated his unique ideas in fields as diverse as mathematics, civil engineering and construction technology. In April of 1894, the Hotoku Ninomiya Shrine was built within Odawara Castle’s walls, enshrining him as deity. There are foreign staff member available, who can explain the faith of the Japanese people in English and German. Visitors may also experience Japanese culture by praying, inscribing wishes on an EMA (a votive wooden tablet painted with a picture), or joining a guided walking tour around the shrine. The precincts of the shrine includes a Ninomiya-themed open café that serves a modern arrangement of a traditional soybean soup that Kinjiro enjoyed. At the Hotoku Kaikan within the property, there are a restaurant with authentic Cantonese cuisine and a relaxing ginger-themed coffee shop.
