Chichibu is known for moss phlox of Hitsujiyama Park, which will be in bloom from mid-April to early May. Your heart will surely be cleansed by looking at a picturesque, lovely flower carpet which consists of 400,000 small flowers! Enjoy strolling around Seibu-Chichibu Station as well.
Chichibu Shrine with layers of history
It is an old shrine said to be built 2,100 years ago and is Soja (a shrine enshrining several gods) of Chichibu area. Chichibu Night Festival that's held every year on December 3rd is considered one of Japan's top three festivals, and the luxurious yatai floats and kasaboko (large parasol-like objects decorated on top with spears and artificial flowers) are famous. Existing Shinto shrine has a wonderful sculpture with brilliant coloring which was created by the person known as a sculptor of NIKKO TOSHOGU SHRINE. Tsunagi-no-ryu (lit. Bridging Dragon) and Kodakara-kosodate-no-tora (Child Treasure Child-rearing Tiger) are worth seeing.
A pavilion where you can learn traditions from the Chichibu Night Festival
This pavilion exhibits materials on the Chichibu Night Festival, an annual festival of Chichibu Shrine. The Chichibu Night Festival is famous for its parade of floats and fire works in winter. The dance performed at or on top of the floats is designated as an important intangible folk culture asset. There are a display of float and a small theater that introduces Chichibu Night Festival. A huge, decorated kasaboko (large parasol-like objects decorated on top with spears and artificial flowers) located around the entrance is dynamic and gorgeous.
Buko Shuzo, a brewery for high-quality sake of Chichiji
Exquisite water, Bukozan Fukuryusui (filtered water of Mt.Buko), is the water used in this brewery and if you bring a container during the business hours, you are allowed to fill your container with water and bring it home. Also, if you make a reservation as a group of 10 or more people, sake tasting and sake brewery tour would be available. The store is designated as a tangible cultural property of the nation, so it is worth seeing.
Chichibu Meisenkan exhibits materials of Meisen
Folk materials on Meisui, textiles of Chichibu, are preserved and exhibited here at Chichibu Meisenkan. The building was constructed in 1930 and it has been designated as a tangible cultural property. You can experience hand-weaving and dyeing textiles through which you can learn the lifestyle of yesteryear.
Find souvenirs at Nakamise Shopping Street
It's a shopping arcade located in front of the entrance of Chichibu, Seibu Chichibu Station. There are arrays of stores including souvenir shops, local sake shops, and restaurants, and at restaurants, you can find udon (wheat noodles) and soba (buckweat noodles) as well as Chichibu specialty, Waraji katsudon (pork cutlet served on top of rice bowl). Also, Nakamise Shopping Street is plan to reopen in spring of 2017 with a complex hot spring facility. Try Buta-no-misozuke (Pork pickled in bean paste)!
Raivaling Waraji katsudon (pork cutlet served on top of rice bowl), Buta misodon (pork picked in bean paste served on top of rice bowl) is another Chichibu specialty. At the original Buta misodon specialty store, Nosaka, a pork picked in original bean paste sauce is grilled over binchotan (high-grade charcoal) which gives it a pleasant smelling. A big charcoal-grilled pork that sticks out of the bowl is overwhelming. You will be surprised to find how juicy it is!
