For many visitors to Japan, Mount Fuji is one of the destinations at the top of the bucket list. Access to Kawaguchiko - the area right around the mountain - used to involve a somewhat longer travel time and even multiple transfers.

But all that changes from March 16, 2019, when the new Fuji Excursion train connects to the Mt. Fuji area directly to Shinjuku Station, one of Tokyo's busiest transit hubs. Follow along as we introduce the Fuji Excursion, its schedule and fees!

About the Fuji Excursion train

The Fuji Excursion is the result of a partnership between Japan Rail (JR) and Fujikyu Corporation, the major rail operator in the Mt. Fuji area. According to the new timetable, the journey to Mt. Fuji from Tokyo will be shortened to just 1 hour and 50 minutes.

Initially, two trains will be operated from Tokyo to Kawaguchiko on weekdays, with three operated on weekends.

The Fuji Excursion stops at several convenient spots before reaching Kawaguchiko. We'd like to mention two of them briefly.

Otsuki: Perfect place to switch over to the JR line and head further west, or hop on a bus to see the world's fastest train at the Yamanashi Prefectural Maglev Exhibition Center.

Fujikyu Highland: Japan’s largest amusement park, it's filled with exciting roller coasters, attractions, and more. Thrill seekers from all over the world flock here - right at the foot of Mount Fuji.
