7-Eleven Japan’s Top 3 Items: What Are Japan’s Favorite Convenience Store Snacks?

Update: 8 August 2018

Japanese convenience stores are famous for their large and tasty selection of drinks, snacks, and sweets. Even full meals are offered as Japan’s iconic bento lunches and oftentimes, you’ll walk into a Japanese convenience store and find a variety of seasonally limited delicacies and products.
Major convenience stores such as 7-Eleven, FamilyMart, or Lawson release more than 10 products every single week and those that become a hot topic on social media and so on are often quickly sold out. We were curious what those “hot topic” goodies are and went to 7-Eleven to find the three top-sellers of this week! (7/30/2018 – 8/6/2018)

It’s particularly hot in Japan this year, so the ice cream corners of supermarkets and convenience stores are especially crowded. It’s also no surprise that 7-Eleven’s current top-seller is ice cream.
This one uses condensed milk from Hokkaido for a wonderfully fluffy texture and creamy finish, with the rich milk flavor matching the shaved ice just perfectly. Shirokuma’s main feature is the toppings. Strawberries, tangerine, pineapple, and blueberry – four tasty fruits! The ice cream and the fruits create a nice balance between mellow milk and gentle acidity, up until the last spoonful! The cup is larger than it looks, with one portion being all you need to satisfy that spontaneous ice cream craving. By the way, shirokuma means polar bear and this ice cream is a local specialty of Kagoshima Prefecture in Kyushu.
“There’s plenty of fruit and the cup is big, but I don’t get bored of the flavor at all. I buy this every year on especially hot summer days, as do my friends,” and “I only ate the authentic Shirokuma once, but this is tastier than the real one!” are some of the comments regarding this tasty cup of ice cream. Make sure to try it!

Second place goes to this strongly carbonated soda. As soon as you open the lid, a pleasant aroma of fruits tickles your nose. Especially the pineapple is pleasantly strong among the blended fruits, making for a refreshing taste. The strong carbonation also adds some cooling fizz for those hot summer days and the little illustration on the label brings a splash of kawaii to the mix!

This spicy cod roe snack is a perfect match for a cold drink. Open the lid a little and pop it in the microwave to heat it up. Once done, the savory aroma will make your mouth water immediately! The firm-to-the-bite squid and the domestically produced cod roe are a great combination and kelp extract brings a hint of the sea amidst the general spiciness. This also is a great late-night snack if you’ve had a long day of sightseeing and just want a quick bite at your hotel room! With only 83kcal, its secret to popularity is also that it’s a rather healthy snack!
